Hedge Sound + Design is a new pursuit in audio and design by Dave Root of Atlas Archimedes Design. Our focus is on creating a new language in the world of audio equipment design - mainly speakers, while maintaining world class sound quality. The Perseids in the shop
Hedge Sound + Design is a culmination of decades of working in the art, design and construction industry added to a long history of interest in stereo and audio equipment. Years of building custom architectural components, sculpture and furniture for both residential and commercial projects while cranking up the sounds on the stereo eventually led to this question - Why can't stereo equipment be something I want to look at as much as it is something I want to listen to?
Years of looking and listening to stereo made me wonder why everything seemed to be a black tower, trying to hide in the shadows. Of course, natural wood finishes were available but they seemed to be more of an exception around modern designs. That started my thinking process and led me to more questions. What about other materials? What about other designs? They pointed at a concept - Make Sound Beautiful. Building a speaker that functioned more like a piece of furniture and had an aesthetic language more like a sculpture became a goal. Furniture does not have to just achieve the basic function goal, it can look amazing while also performing that function really well. Applying sculptural concepts to a functional item in a space can further accentuate that experience.
The process at Hedge Sound + Design starts with the visual concept. From there the material choices are considered and then the design starts to emerge on paper. Then the concepts are moved into a material form. Models are made and different pieces are worked on to test some of the ideas in 3D. While this is happening, the engineering process is also under way. Drivers are picked out, the physical volume for the speaker gets calculated, and the testing begins. Drivers get measured and recorded, then the electronics calculations begin. We use DSP to establish the crossover parameters, which are then translated over to a passive crossover, or used directly in a powered speaker.
The Perseids is our first speaker to fully embrace both of our goals for design and sound. It is a 3-way design housed in a cast concrete enclosure with an Osage Orange (Hedge!) front. This particular design has two port tubes - one on the rear for the main enclosure and the one in the front that ports the internal enclosure for the midrange driver. That port is terminated with a wheel-thrown porcelain fitting.
Concrete was chosen for the main enclosure because it's heavy, it's solid, and we love concrete. These are cast in a mold then polished and finished once cured. These speakers weigh in at 250 lbs. each and have zero rattle or ring. Concrete is natural material for speakers for that reason. It very much deadens any sound waves and prevents them from going where they are not supposed to go. As a material matrix, our concrete is composed of Portland cement, sand, gravel and a few other ad-mixtures, or material components, added to help with the casting process and the performance of the final product. Concrete also contains a large amount of air which makes it ideal for sound containment.
Osage Orange was also chosen because we love it, but it's also a fascinating tree in American history. It is a native North American species, and it was planted in numbers into the hundreds of millions on farms throughout the Midwest to function as a "shelterbelt" in the 1930s as part of the efforts to stave off the agricultural disasters brought on by the Dust Bowl. Before that, Native Americans used it for bows and other tools. It caught the attention of French explorers in this area when they saw it in action as a bow, calling it bois d'arc. It has been said that one bow of Osage Orange was worth a blanket and a horse in trade.
Osage Orange is locally known here as HEDGE, and we borrowed our name from that. It is the hardest and hottest burning wood native to North America. The lumber is a beautiful orange color and is incredibly strong and fun to work with. It bends well, finishes well and it can even last for decades out in the weather.
As a speaker, The Perseids lives up to those standards set by those amazing materials. The sound is smooth, clear and strong. Beautiful mids and bass, topped by a clean upper end. These can be auditioned with an appointment, and they customized by color of concrete and species of wood if desired.
These are on a limited edition run of 10 pairs and the price is available upon request.
